Eternal Rome: A never ending love

Roma eterna: un amore per sempre

… An unforgettable bell sound, space-filling, in the finish reinforced by the echo in between the rows of Bernini’s collonades, gently fading away through the surrounding backstreets and disappearing in the endless depths of the starry night sky. This was my first, but formative impression of this awe-inspiring city of Rome. Captured not quite forty years ago – at midnight on the Piazza di San Pietro – during a brief stopover in transit into the south of Italy… With my almost 6 years I was not yet capable to comprehend the entire solemnity of these massive columns in the light cone of the surrounding lamps. Nevertheless my fright due to this impressive acoustic experience – for which I wasn’t prepared – I had the intuitive feeling of protection and security. But perhaps exactly these unexpected sensations are a part of the mystery and of the ban of this fascinating metropolis. Rome offers its own attitude towards life, in which we need to immerse ourselves for being able to capture it in full. No finite term may describe the dimensions of the world’s largest and highly impressive open-air museum. It is a city of superlatives with all its ups and downs during its three thousand year old history. Whereby roman superlatives are not measured – unlike in cities of the modern era – in the height of the skyscraper or the latest technological advances of the local public transport. It is the offered overwhelmingly large variety, diversity and beauty of exhilarating art treasures,

of an impressive history and a stunning culture,

the unsurpassable “Eleganza” of its boulevards and shopping promenades,

its exuberant joy of life,

the coquetry and “la dolce vita” which has the impression to have had the birth on its countless “piazze”,

which have their great hour after sunset, in the frenzy of the seemingly never-ending Roman nights,

the infinite views from one of the Roman hills over the mighty city, gently enclosed by the surrounding mountain ridges,

which foothills spread into the beautiful Campagna, reaching up till the Mediterranean sea …

Rome is an allegory of life in which the tenderness of the sunrise seems to be dancing with the fallen pillars of the ancient world in the fields of the Forum Romanum, in which the beguilingly scent of summer is flowing  generously out of lush gardens and where the crystal clear-sparkling fountain cascades on the magnificent squares are going hand in hand with the cozy-shady arcades in the courtyards of the lordly palazzi. Where the treasures of the past are gilding the presence and the wounds of history loose a part of their cruelty in the magic of a tender summer night, striving for reconciliation. Clear the stage for a city that was created for to be discovered and adored!

Have much pleasure with my photographic declaration of love for Rome, with my rambles through city streets and squares, through parks and on hills, over stairs till up to cupolas…

in search for special moments …

Grazie Roma – also that you instructed me that your discovery is only partially predictable, that week-long trip preparations are turning out useless overnight, when an improvised construction site or a gigantic billboard is blocking a great and desired view. But if one has the courage to get completely involved in you, following intuitively the beating of your heart and pulse, trusting you, one will be rewarded with extraordinary insights and outlooks:

Viste di passione volando tra tempi e spazi – Passionate views inspired by time and space …

Eternal Rome  – a never ending love…
